Chapter Eleven After they left Bobby’s house, they drove in silence a good deal of the way. They stopped for dinner at a restaurant in Philadelphia. David hardly said more than a few sentences all night, both in the car and in the restaurant. He ate a few bites of food and didn’t drink anything but water. Jonah wanted to discuss his gift of mind reading with David in more detail. He’d assumed David would want to discuss it. But he decided to wait because David seemed so drained of all feeling and emotion.

The only emotion David showed at all that night was when the waiter forgot to bring him more bottled water. David slammed his fists on the table and screamed for the waiter across the room. For a minute, the entire restaurant went silent, all heads turned toward David and Jonah’s table. The waiter stood there gaping for a second, red-faced and hunched over someone’s salad, holding a pepper mill, and then he ran to get David’s water.

Jonah had been enjoying his meal up until that point. He’d just filled his mouth with a forkful of creamy smooth garlic mashed potatoes when David screamed for the waiter. He was so stunned by David’s obnoxious behavior he almost choked. Jonah had begun to notice one thing for certain about David Abernathy: no one could never predict when David would turn on someone and become a monster.

Jonah swallowed his mashed potatoes and reached for David’s wrist. This happened while everyone in the restaurant was still staring at them. Jonah smiled at David and said, without raising his voice above a stage whisper, “If you ever, ever embarrass me again in public like this, I’ll get up, leave, and that’s the last time you’ll see me. That guy is a waiter who works hard to make a living. He’s human; this place is packed. So he forgot to bring your goddamn water. You’ll live, asshole.” He continued to smile so no one would know how hard he’d clenched his back teeth. But he looked directly into David’s eyes so David would know he wasn’t joking around. David stared at him with wide eyes, as if stunned he would react this way. He didn’t say a word.

When the waiter returned with the water, David apologized for being so rude. David didn’t say anything at first; he might not have said anything. But when Jonah gave him a gentle kick under the table and sent him a look, David frowned and said, “I’m sorry I shouted at you. I’ll make it up to you.” Before they left the restaurant, David tipped the waiter twice as much as he should have.

Between Philadelphia and New York, Jonah did most of the talking. Partly because the food gave him a second wind and partly because he wanted David to know he wasn’t mad at him. David asked him why he’d majored in puppetry in college again and this was a topic that Jonah could talk about for hours without stopping.
